Cellular-Enabled Device Support

Feature Overview

Impact programs can be configured to use cellular-enabled devices or a central cellular hub device for reading transmission. These devices do not require an app download, bluetooth pairing, etc - the device is connected to the patient either by the client or Validic, and the patient simply starts using the device(s) and readings are transmitted to the clinical team via Impact.

Supported Cellular Device Sources and Measurement Types

  • Smart Meter - individual cellular enabled devices

    • Blood Pressure

    • Blood Glucose

    • Weight

    • Oxygen Saturation

  • Stel Life - cellular hub device

    • Blood Pressure

    • Blood Glucose

    • Weight

    • Oxygen Saturation

    • Body Temperature

Supported Cellular Connection Types

  • Individual Cellular Enabled Devices - here the devices themselves have unique cellular onboard hardware and maintain a cellular connection. For example, a cellular blood pressure monitor can be used in a hypertension program. There is no central hub device in this model.

  • Central Cellular Hub Model - this model uses a centralized cellular hub, where devices are attached to the hub via bluetooth, and a central cellular connection is responsible for reading transmission for all attached devices. This is helpful in programs utilizing multiple device types.

Supported Workflows

  • Validic Logistics Fulfillment and Device Management - in this model, Validic will fulfill device orders, connect the device(s) to the participant, and ship the participant the devices to begin use.

  • Client Device Management - in this model, the client is responsible for connecting the device(s)/hub to the participant, and providing the device(s) to the patient. Devices can be sourced from Validic.

Impact Admin (Program Setup)

Programs must be configured to use cellular-enabled devices. Create a new program via Impact Admin: see Setting Up a Remote Monitoring Program

Configure Cellular Device Connectivity Options

  • No cellular devices - these programs will not use cellular-enabled devices. Cellular connection options will not be available.

  • Individual cellular devices - this option should be used for individual cellular-enabled devices, for example Smart Meter devices.

  • Cellular hub device - this option should be used for cellular hub device, for example Stel cellular hub.

*If using Validic Logistics, the program should be enabled with logistics support and device ordering for Validic fulfillment of the devices.

Update program content to support your desired workflow - contact a Validic representative for assistance if needed.

Validic Logistics Cellular-Enabled Device Fulfillment

Here Validic handles the device association and fulfillment. The provider simply enrolls the patient in a cellular supported program and orders the device(s) during enrollment. Validic will then receive the order, attach, and ship the device(s) to the participant.

The participant can then simply begin using the device(s) once received and readings will flow to the care team.

Client Cellular-Enabled Device Management

Here you are responsible for the device connections and management. Devices can still be sourced from Validic, but it is the client’s responsibility to connect and provide the device(s) to the participant.

Connecting Individual Cellular-Enabled Devices

Impact Clinician Dashboard

  • Once participant is enrolled in the program with cellular device support, a gear icon will display next to each source type within the Clinician Dashboard for the participant.

Click the gear icon, a field will display to allow IMEI entry. IMEI stands for “International Mobile Equipment Identity,” and it is a unique 15-digit number that identifies a mobile device.

    • Enter the device’s IMEI into the field - a barcode scanner can be used or the IMEI can be entered manually.

    • Confirm the IMEI within the field.

    • Click “Save” to attach the device to the participant. The device can now be used and will transmit readings.

    • If a mistake is made on IMEI entry, or if a device needs to be switched, the IMEI can be removed and a new one can be added. Note that the device can only be connected to a single user at a time.

  • Attach a device for each relevant measurement type within the program.

  • Upon program un-enrollment (in last program utilizing the device), the device is disconnected from the user, and readings will no longer flow.

  • *Note that even if the user is disconnected, a cellular connection will still be maintained on the device until manually removed by the client or Validic.

Impact Support Dashboard

  • Click the gear icon, a field will display to allow IMEI entry.

    • If a mistake is made on IMEI entry, or if a device needs to be switched, the IMEI can be cleared and a new one can be added. Note that the device can only be connected to a single user at a time.

  • Attach a device for each relevant measurement type within the program.

  • Upon program un-enrollment (in last program utilizing the device), the device is disconnected from the user, and readings will no longer flow.

Connecting a Cellular Hub Device

Impact Clinician Dashboard

  • Once participant is enrolled in the program with cellular hub device support, a gear icon will display next to the “Hub” device source within the Clinician Dashboard for the participant.

  • Click the gear icon, a field will display to allow “Hub Identifier” entry. The “Hub Identifier” is a unique ID for each cellular hub.

    • Enter the “Hub Identifier” into the field - a barcode scanner can be used or the Hub Identifier can be entered manually.

    • Confirm the “Hub Identifier” within the field.

    • Click “Save” to attach the device to the participant. The device can now be used and will transmit readings.

    • If a mistake is made on Hub Identifier entry, or if a device needs to be switched, the Identifier can be removed and a new one can be added. Note that the device can only be connected to a single user at a time.

  • Upon program un-enrollment (in last program utilizing the hub device), the device is disconnected from the user, and readings will no longer flow.

  • *Note that even if the user is disconnected, a cellular connection will still be maintained on the hub device until manually removed by the client or Validic.

HealthBridge and Cellular-Enabled Devices

The participant may optionally download the Validic HealthBridge companion mobile app (iOS/Android) to be able to view past readings, program goals, and notifications (this is not required).
